We all know that huge amounts of sweets and pastries can cause obesity. And that’s not the only ill effect that our favorite products can have on our body. It turns out that some ordinary foods that we treat as healthy can actually be harmful to our body.
We gathered 11 popular products that we should be careful about.
Shrimp are able to accumulate heavy metals, which is why it’s so important to know where these shrimp were caught. Of all the seafood, shrimp are the cholesterol containing champions. If you eat them too often, they can cause a spike in the cholesterol levels in your blood. It’s recommended to consume shrimp with vegetables because they help our body get rid of cholesterol and reduce the risks of issues.
2. Processed cheese
It’s not really healthy to eat cheese packed in plastic slices. All the sheets are produced with a large number of chemical additives that give cheese its flavor and color. So you actually don’t eat cheese, you eat plastic. It’s recommended to have a piece of cheese from a wedge that hasn’t already been pre-sliced.
Most potato chips that you can buy in the supermarket are less potato, and more additives, than we think. Some studies have shown that the majority of bags with chips contain less than 60% of potatoes. But there is a huge amount of salt, additives, dyes, preservatives, and so one.
Rice grows in flooded fields and gets enriched with inorganic arsenic that’s washed out of the soil. If you consume rice on a regular basis, you increase your chances of getting diabetes, developmental disorders, nervous system diseases, and even lung and bladder cancer.
Scientists from Queen’s University of Belfast conducted several experiments with rice cooking and found a way to make it harmless. If you leave rice in water overnight, the arsenic concentration will be reduced by 80%.
Yogurts from supermarkets contain preservatives, thickeners, aromatizers, and other “healthy” components and they don’t really look like classic yogurts made of milk with lactic acid bacteria.
The main dangers are sugar and milk fat. It’s recommended to consume no more than 6 tsp of sugar per day. And 4 oz (100 gr) of yogurt can contain 3 tsp! Side effects are the following: obesity, risk of getting diabetes, and a weakened pancreas. The average yogurts are rather fatty (starting from 2.5%) and they increase the cholesterol levels which can cause a stroke or a heart attack.
Natural yogurts are really good for our body and it’s easy to prepare them. You’ll only need milk and dry yeast. You can also add fruit and honey to make your yogurt even tastier.
6. Hot dogs and processed meat
If supermarket hot dogs that you buy consist of 50% meat, you’re the lucky one. As a rule, they’re usually only 10-15% meat. Other ingredients include bone meal, cartilage, skin, vegetable and animal fats, starch, soy protein, and salt. And you’ll never know whether this soy is genetically modified or not.
Thickeners, dyes, preservatives, and flavor enhancers are usually added as well. These supplements pile up in our body, destroy our immune system, cause allergies, and even cause serious diseases like pancreatic cancer. Hot dogs and sausages are bad for kids: their digestive systems are unable to process these complex chemical compounds.
Scientists from the University of Glasgow claim that, based on research of 260,000 women, consumption of minimal amounts of processed meat may increase the risk of breast cancer.
7. Moldy cheeses
These extravagant sorts of cheese like Roquefort, Dorblu, Camembert, and Brie have a number of useful features: they increase calcium absorption, reduce the negative effect of UV rays, enrich our body with protein, prevent dysbacteriosis, improve our hormonal background and our cardiovascular system. Penicillium roqueforti (a saprotrophic fungus) thins the blood and improves its flow.
But you should remember that it’s recommended to consume not more than 2 oz (50 gr) of this type of cheese per day. If you exceed the norm, the intestinal microflora will be spoiled with Penicillium that causes dysbacteriosis and your body will become addicted to antibiotics. Additionally, the mold contains ferments that cause allergies.
Pregnant and breastfeeding women should eliminate blue and white cheese as its mold contains listeria that can cause infectious diseases. Pregnant women may experience fever and vomiting. The most dangerous consequences are miscarriage, premature delivery, and fetal deviations.
8. Salty crackers
Do you like salty crackers? Diabetes, stroke, heart attack, obesity, atherosclerosis, and Alzheimer’s disease like them too. It’s recommended to eat less than 0.20 oz (1 tsp) of salt per day. One small salty cracker contains 3 times the daily recommended portion. Because of large amounts of salt, blood pressure can increase and an arterial spasms may occur.
9. Chocolate covered cookies
They’re one of the most popular kinds of cookies and they have one drawback: they are covered with confectionery fats instead of chocolate. If you eat these “chocolate” cookies on a regular basis, you’re likely to gain weight. These products are enriched with trans fats that lead to cardiovascular diseases and an early death.
10. Sponge cakes
The first thing that will confuse you is the shelf life. These products like cakes and cupcakes can be stored at least 5 months without spoiling. Nothing happens to them. A huge dose of fats and preservatives turns this dessert into poison.
11. Ice cream
Scientists from the University of Georgia conducted a series of experiments and found out the connection between popular in food industry emulsifiers and colorectal cancer.
When thickeners and emulsifiers (polysorbate 80 and carboxymethyl cellulose) are used together, they cause significant intestinal microflora changes making your body prone to inflammation and contributing to cancer development. Polysorbate 80 is added to ice cream to get a better texture and prevent it from melting. Carboxymethyl cellulose is used as a stabilizer and a thickener.
Additionally, milk fat is also used here (yes, the same fat as for yogurt). It turns ice cream into a “fat bomb” for our body. Scientists from Michigan State University found out that if teenagers consume this product during puberty, their risk of getting breast cancer increases. And specialists from Kaiser Permanente, a medical consortium in Oakland, California, proved that women who survived after breast cancer are likely to get it again.
Bonus: Products that can make your eyes change their color
Some people think that it’s possible to lighten the color of your eyes with the help of products like honey, spinach, ginger, chamomile tea, and so one. Presumably, your eyes will get brighter in just 2 weeks. Unfortunately, there are no scientific facts to support these claims and everything is based on people’s experiences.
